Spanish for Bilinguals
*This courses are offered for groups of 15 students or more.
Principal aim: This program aims to give students the tools they need to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the Spanish language. On completion of this program, students will have a good mastery of the grammar.
They will have greater fluency in written communication and more self-confidence in their ability to speak the language correctly.
Profile of targeted students: This program is designed for bilingual students of Hispanic descent who understand and speak the language fluently. Students will have to sit a written and oral exam in order to qualify for entrance to the program.
Length of study, credits and periods when the program is available: The program lasts ten weeks and is divided into six hours of study per day, from Monday to Friday, totaling 300 hours of instruction. On completion of the course, the student will receive 18 university credits. The program is available in SUMMER I and II, and also in AUTUMN I and II.
Course Description: The course is divided into two parts: grammar to help the student perfect her/his written and spoken Spanish; and content related to the history and culture of Mexico. It contains the following subcomponents:
Grammar I: This focuses on identification of the parts of speech (noun, adjective, pronoun, etc.); the verb, its tenses and conjugation.
Grammar II: The focus is on syntax, beginning with mood and the various types of sentence and phrase: simple sentences, compound sentences and the role of conjunctions, as well as coordinate and subordinate phrases, with their classification and use.
Writing I: This subject includes exercises designed to raise awareness of and give practice in punctuation, proofreading for spelling mistakes (especially b/v, c/s/z, etc.), vocabulary exercises, accents, capital and small case letters, English interference, and so on.
Writing II: The focus is on techniques for writing and certain genres, such as letters, stories, articles, descriptions, narratives and essays.
Mexican culture: This gives students an in-depth view of Mexican society and culture. The main purpose is to arouse interest in the development of Mexico's history, society, politics, education, customs, and traditions, as well as both moral and material aspects of Mexican life.
History of Mexico: A review of Mexican history, from the pre-Hispanic. |
